Hi All,

I'm on the verge of buying a kayak from Pakboats. The two that are the most appealing to me are the Puffin Saranac and the XT-17.

My intended uses are primarily for near shore day trips on the Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, along the New England coast, or the Ohio River. I might also want to use it for multi-day tripping paddling solo. I do have a 55 lb kevlar canoe for multi-day tripping with a partner.

I prefer these two models because I could use them both solo and double. I mostly paddle solo, but occasionally my wife comes with me. I'd probably only buy the solo deck to start and plan on using it deckless if my wife is with me.

I'm an experienced canoe paddler, much less experienced as a kayaker. I'm in reasonably good condition, weigh 175 and am 5' 6".

We will be traveling now that we are retired and being able to fold the boat and put it in the car is a real plus. I took my Folbot Aleut (12 ft.) with us on our New England fall trip last year stuffed behind the front seat. It made the choice to take a boat on a long car trip easy.

So what's your advice?

Fritz

For protected waters and shoreline travels I think the versatility of the Puffin Saranac would do nicely. you can even use it without the top as a sit on top. I have a Puffin Swift and use it on the
Potomac river but I would like to move up to a Saranac.

Thanks Bucko, that's helpful. I'm probably going to go with the Puffin Saranac.

The XT-17 is a large yak for someone your size. It would be great if you planned to use it mostly as double, but for solo use it's intended for paddlers over 180 pounds carrying gear for multiple days.

Thanks Apathizer. Sounds like the Puffin Saranac is a better choice for me.

I have a brand new Pakboat quest xt17 with rudder and pedal that is unopened and still in its original shipping box
It is about 65 lbs and a bit heavy for my needs
I paddled in a quest 15 with Alv and like it so I plan to sell my Unused XT -17 and either buy a quest 15 or saranac
I am waiting for Alv to bring a Saranac down to Florida to try
I also have a Kayaksailor sail I could sell with it but I will probably bundle this with my tandem KASKAZI duo tandem kayak when I sell that
