Post subject: Green cedar for GP?
PostPosted: Mon Feb 05, 2007 10:49 am
Calling all Norm Abram wannabes (or as we say in New England, "Naaaaaam" Abram... :)) or other wood gurus...

I bought a couple of pieces of red cedar yesterday to make a GP and the lesser cousin. The instructions I downloaded from the net say "seasoned" cedar, but I think this is green (OK, not actually "green" in color, but not seasoned). I'm wondering if I could just leave it in a warm basement for a few days to dry out and then start work on it anyway or if this wood is just not going to be of any use. Anyone know?

Cedar is reasonably dimensionally stable as it dries ... or, at least it does not check very much. Go for it.

Make the loom as large as your hands can tolerate. Cedar is light, and strong for its weight, but those cedar GP sticks tend to break.

The folks at the lumber yard suggested I weight down the plank to keep it from warping upward at the ends as it dried. I followed their advice, and it did not so warp. But that's probably what Dave was talking about when he said "dimensionally stable" - I may not've needed to place bricks along the plank's length. Live and learn. :)
