 Post subject: My Aleut Paddle

I enjoy doing a little wood work now and then and after finishing my Aleutian Baidarka a few years ago, I had a 2x4 of western yellow cedar left over. So i thought I'd carve an Aleut paddle to go with my boat! Inspired by Lew Plummers Aleut paddle replica and equipped with a set of line drawings I found online, I started whittling away the parts that weren't paddle! :) I'm a slow typist and they say a picture says a thousand words so here are some pics of the finished paddle.

Here a pic of my baidarka before I skinned it.

and with skin...

I finished the paddle with a boiled linseed finish. The black is lacquer which I smoothed out and dulled down with steel wool. There are no rough edges at any of the colour changes.

The pattern on the paddle is a traditional one. The darts half way up the blade are a guide of how deep to dip your paddle!

On to part two to get around all the weird board posting rules....

Just a couple more pics...

I aged the finish a bit with steel wool so you can see the detail of the carving better...

The power channel tappers to a single ridge at the tip!

The forward face of the paddle is smooth with just a slight rocker.

Heres the detail of the start of the ridge channel at the center loom...

and finally a closer look of the overall shape of one of the blades

I'm really pleased with the way it turned out and I'm really looking forward to trying it out this summer! :D

Thanks, that's a good question. Let me weigh it.... Not bad it's 2lbs.8-1/2 oz. Only 4-1/4oz more than my current designs touring paddle!!

I salute your Aleut!

Splendid work. Looks terrific.

Now I know where to go to get one of my own
