Alex, I think the VHF channels for interkayak communication are pretty much the same ones power boaters are allowed to use. The first link below is a summary for the US and Canada. Confusingly, there is some variation from region to region in Canada.

I usually use 68 after hailing on 16, except in the Charlottes, where local usage concentrates on channel 6. In the US, channel 6 is for "Intership Safety" (see second link).
