Fiberglass Repair

Post by 4Papa »

Maybe this should go in the Feathercraft section but it deals with basic fiberglass repairs, of which I know zilch. I have an almost 30-year old FC K2 Expedition which featured twin fiberglass coamings. After sitting almost 20 years in storage, I recently assembled the boat and in the process cracked one of the coamings. The break is about 2-3-inches vertical

and I'm guessing it's an easy fix for one who works in fiberglass. Any suggestions on fiberglass cloth vs. mat on a curved surface? Maybe a fiberglass repair for dummies kit? I'm not looking to make it pretty, just functional. I've considered going to a boat repair shop, but since the coamings are clearly brittle from age, I figure this break won't be the last and I might as well figure out how to fix it. Thanks in advance.
