hi constructors,
I've been in a couple of situations where a rudder would have been very welcome. It's a bit late to think of a perfect solution when the folder has been build .. anyway that I can come to think of carries a lot of compromises, and I don't recall having seen any folders carrying a rudder. Any suggestions before I get going on punching and glueing something to the skin?

cheers

What folding kayak do you have now?
Some are ready to add a rudder - usually only from the boat manufacturer.
Sail Your Kayak has some rudder kits that can be adapted to various boats.

hi flatwater

This is images of the latest. All are home-build with some association to the sea-rover's dimensions as for the first. The second was born from the first, but shorter.
The last:

.. I doubt that you've seen anything that it is comparable to ..

Anyway, I made an acceptable rudder last night (said before testing). The blade may be too small, but that's not an issue since it can be changed. I've made a solid structure to attach (band & some velcro) it to - this was my main worry.

I got a glimpse of a rudder on a commercial plastic-kayak .. looks engineous.

Both the folding kayak brands which I have owned are available with rudders: Feathercraft (which makes such a fine rudder assembly that even people with standard rigid kayaks buy them for their boats) and PakBoat, who also sells their rudders separately.

My Feathercraft K-1 Expedition had a factory rigged full rudder but my current FC and PB kayaks do not. I do, however, have the removable hard rubber skeg for my FC Wisper, which definitely helps with tracking in windy conditions.

Talk to Mark at Long Haul Folding Kayaks. He's in Colorado and has a lot of old Klepper parts. The Klepper rudder assembly could easily be attached to your skin and supported by your frame if the measurements are close. Once you have the mount installed the rest would be easy.

It feels a bit messy with the rudder:
it has to be mounted (montaged..),
treated carefully since it is fragile
and.. eventually I have to 'think' to use it with my big-toes

so, I made finn and mounted it right in front of the rudder, using the stem.
It fits the bill better. The kayak is seriously out of balance without some steering-gear. Last night I went without (almost no wind) - and took to the beach 300 meters later to add the finn. Only very slight correction was needed for the next two hours .. that's how it should be.
