Okinawa to Kagoshima... Take 3

Post by tsunamichuck »

Hopefully 3rd time is the charm. Purchased my ( non-refundable) air tickets, Made myself unavailable for 6 weeks at work had Feathercraft refurbish the Khatsalano and most importantly, got Jun's blessing. Been putting in some 15+ mile days and getting myself thrashed on the river when not working. I plan to race in the All Japan Sea Kayak Marathon, about 1/3 of the way up. I will post pics and report in when possible. Flying out in 36 days!

What are the overall dates of the event, Chuck? Does it stop at all islands on the way? ( I assume so.) Do you camp along the way? Carry your own supplies?

and paddling will start the 18th or 19th. Island hopping all the way up. Couple of 30 mile crossings but most around 20-25 or so.

This sounds really cool. I've never lived out of a kayak for more than a few days. I'd love to do a longer trip. Just a question of planning I suppose...

Out of curiosity - what did FC do to the Khats?

Warm water and air

make it a lot easier. Tropical gear is much lighter and the islands have decent populations. Feathercraft replaced some bent frame pieces and rerivitted in some of the frame pieces. and made my skin repairs more aesthetic.

Those first few pics look a bit like Iriomote. Have you been down there, Chuck? A circumnavigation of Iriomote, in a folder and beach-camping, is on my list of things I'd like to do in this life.

For those not familiar: Iriomote is the second-to-southernmost island in Japan, about 150km from Taiwan. It's almost all protected/national park, with only one road that goes about 40% of the way around it-- the rest is unspoiled wilderness and empty beaches. We went there in January, for a few days... it's a loooong flight from Tokyo, although not so bad from Okinawa (Naha).

Also: I've been wondering how one of the traditional conical hats would work for kayaking. I imagine they'd be hell in wind. Have you tried one, Chuck?

Never tried the traditional hat

usually wear a ball cap of some sort. I have paddle the Urauchi River and hiked up to the waterfalls on Iriomote. As I recall, it is a 30 minute boat ride from Ishigaki Island. Both are really scenic, fun places to go.

Launching today

Post by tsunamichuck »

Got into Okinawa late Friday night. Spent Saturday getting some small stuff for the trip. Put the Khats together this am and it survived the flight intact. I am spending 4-5 days just taking slow heading north along the Okinawa coast before starting the crossings. This will give me time to acclimate to the heat and humidity and get my adjustments just right. Have a great summer.
