Ted,
Hi. I'm in Hillsdale most weekends and can often be found on the Hudson either alone in the Ellsmere or with my wife in the Klepper. Usually I put in at the Hudson ramp but Germantown and Rhinecliff to the south or Stuyvesant to the north are good spots to launch, each having its own advantages. The Watertrail Assn. Guide to the Hudson is a great source of information unless you want to know where the good restaurants are, about which it is silent.
The Housatonic River is good for canoes or plastic river boats with too much bottom scraping and down trees for a folder. Most of the lakes around here are too small. The Hudson is by far the richest resource for a kayaker.
