A note to Klepper sailors. I took a classic Egyptian cotton S4 main and jib, a newer S4 Dacron main and jib and a light nylon Passat main and jib to Sail Rite. They have measured the sails and now have them in their sail kit inventory.

Would you happen to know if and where one can purchase a Klepper S2 or S4 complete sail rig? Thanks.

Thalweg,
This is very good to know! I might want to order a new set of Klepper S4 sails, perhaps out of Dacron. What weight of Dacron (oz/sq ft) is used? If you have S4 sails made out of all 3 cloths (Egyptian cotton, Dacron, and nylon), can you tell us which one you prefer, and for what types of conditions?

BTW: They should also have my Klepper 32 square foot genoa in their inventory, should anyone wish to order one. I had it made from 1.5 oz ripstop nylon. I have only had a chance to use it once so far, and need to make some adjustments to my rigging, and try it in differing conditions and runs (after I get back from China, later this month).

Chris

Thank you so much for doing that! I'm really excited to know that they have them in their design inventory-- especially the rare Passat sail!

Treecutter. You asked where you can buy a complete Klepper sail rig. Of course the simple and easist way is from a Klepper dealer. At full price of course.

Klepper won't sell me anything for my Passat. They should take a lesson from Mercedes and support everything they'e ever sold...

I have not sailed the cotton sails. And I have only sailed the dacron A2 sails and the light nylon on the Passat. With different hulls it is hard to compare.

A friend just purchased a S4 main and jib kit from Sail Rite. I think the kit cost was about $350 the Passat sails would probably be a little more. I you go to the Sail Rite web site you can ask for a quote of kit or completed sails.

I will post some pictures of the Passat once I get it cleaned up.

I checked out the Sail Rite website and the collection of sails is impressive. I wish they had the square footage somewhere in the sail description. I don't think calculating the area is all that easy. The kits are very affordable and there's an impressive collection of videos that show you how to sew all sorts of stuff. I finally found a series of videos on making a main sail... pretty interesting, and they way the deliver the package it doesn't look like it would be that hard to do. Might be something to think about if I ever get to that mizzen idea.

Not positive my old Kenmore has the clearance space needed for the task... fun to think about though.

Here are the mainsail videos: http://www.sailrite.com/Constructing-a-Full-Batten-Mainsail-Sail-Kit-Video
