Bilge pump extension

Post by RangerTim »

When I am paddling I do not have much of a problem with water entering the cockpits of the Folbot GII, Yukon, and Aleut that I use. When sailing in rough conditions, lots of water comes in. I have yet to mod a spray deck to work with the full Balogh Rig. Problem is, the water does not pool where I sit. Rather, it tends to pool in the stern, where a pump cannot reach and sponging is a pain.

I found that with a couple of pvc fittings-an elbow and a barbed adapter- from the plumbing section of Lowe's, and vinyl tubing also from Lowe's, a pump extension can be made that fits perfectly into the intake of a Seattle Sports pump. The extension requires no adhesive and, when routed between the keelson tubes, removes water from the stern. The pump easily can be removed from the extension for use elsewhere in the boat or for storage. I use loops of velcro one wrap around the keelson to keep the tubing in place.

The vinyl tubing steps down in size from what fits the barbed adapter to what fits between the keelson tubes. I will likely make the steps a bit longer to assure each step stays inside the next, but so far it has not come apart, even without adhesive.

The pump intake and the barbed adapter both fit snugly inside the elbow. No Leaks. Still, the pump can be removed from the elbow with no trouble.
