Chesapeake Light Craft have come up with a "take apart" kayak, based on their "Shearwater" and called "shearwater sport". It is built like a conventional stich and glue kayak, and then cut into three sections with a saw, then finished. The length is 14 ft 6 inches and the beam 25 inches, the weight is 48 lbs. It is sold as a kit for $1,150 us, or the plans and construction book can be bought for $15. Might be worth looking into for those who need a "take apart" for perhaps storage reasons.

I always wondered if the same technique could be used for the aluminum frame boats. Split in to 3 sections, then simply snapped together and slid in to a kayak skin. Just never got around to trying it.
