I am planning to race. There is no folding kayak class. But if enough folks sign up,we could make one. I am probably going to race in the over 17ft class in my 1986 Nordkapp. Gonna get slayed by the 19 footers.. unless the sea state is rough, but should be pretty fun regardless. Anyone interested in doing this in a folding kayak?

Chuck,
I did a 9 mile race a couple of years ago on the Hudson River as the only folder entered. The best I can say about my performance is that I was not last. What really hurt was the lack of respect for folders as a breed. When the results were published each competitors boat was identified with the name of the manufacturer and model. For my elegant Montbell Ellsmere 570 all they entered was "Folding Kayak," as if all folders look alike. Elli was so insulted she refused to do the race last year. She said she had enough of both racing and racism, although if a race were organized by and for folders she might reconsider.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

Competed in 3 piece Nordkapp. 20 miles in 3:41:58 averaging 5.4 mph over the course. Very pleasent paddle for the first 15 miles, hell for the last 5

5.4 mph for 20 miles! Wow. Congratulations. How would you have done in the Kats?

I did 5.04 for 9 miles and hurt my shoulder patting myself on the back. That was in a boat that goes into a backpack. I use that as my excuse for not being fast, and also, paraphrasing the ancient aphorism, it's the quality, not the speed, that counts.

BTW in my last post I inadvertently stretched my Ellsmere to 570cm. Elli is still 530cm, she just has a new name.

Probaly pretty close, maybe a bit slower.

3 years ago I raced in tougher conditions ie flat water, unfavorable currents, 95 deg heat 95% humidity and finished 22 miles in 4:03 averaging 5.43 mph and that included a 5 minute rest stop to pee and rehydrate. I had paddled 225 in 10 days prior to the race and did not have a messed up shoulder then. This race kicked my butt. I felt 20 times worse than I did after doing a 35 mile day last April.
