Just used a new tool for the first time to repair my Klepper hull a bit. A hand awl. This is basically a hand held sewing machine that lets you stitch through heavy canvas and webbing. I used it to attach a web handle to the bow and stern of my kayak (the old handles broke). It does take a bit of practice and stitching up at the nose of the kayak is hard since you need to kid of peel the hull over itself to reach both sides. It came with a heavy wax thread that should hold up nicely. You can change out the thread on the spool to whatever you want.

Awl in awl, it works very well and is a welcome addition to my boating tool kit.

Hey, I have had one of those for quite a while!
Bought it to make a leather mast boot for my old sail boat.
Kayak related: I used this to sew the formerly merely glued hull seams on my Nautiraid. Worked well, but slow...

Hi,

I've bought them at REI (Recreational Equipment Incorporated) which have a lot of stores in the US..... Just looked at their web site and they are still there -- Speedy Sticher Sewing Awl.

And they're not at awl hard to use. A little practice and you'll get a hand awl on the technique.
