Where Rudder Housing Meets Deck

Post by martin2007 »

I've a problem with the rudder housing on my 70's-era Tyne folder. I use Klepper rudder kits that work very well on the Tyne boat. Unfortunately, the interface between the stern tip's metal housing which receives the rudder pin and the deck fabric itself is now in trouble. The fabric is worn and disintegrating badly around the housing. This small area needs reinforcing or re-building. I haven't a clear idea how to proceed. Any ideas?

Hi Martin,
If you were able to post a photo(s) it would be easier for people to help.
All the best,
Ian

You're absolutely right, Ian. Pictures are a must. Unfortunately, I've convinced myself that I just might be able to limp my way to the end without having mastered the acrobatics involved in posting pictures on on-line forums. If only posting pics were as simple as running a catheter into me I'd say sharpen that needle. The happy part of this post is that I went ahead with 3M marine epoxy. I reinforced all of the fabric in the trouble-spot, 6-9 sq. inches and produced a hard, glossy surface that seems to have solidly anchored the housing once more. It's bought me some more time with the old boat.
