Post subject:  Plywood for kayak seats?

I'd like to replace the 1/4 plywood seats on my boat. Do I need marine plywood--or will something else work? Thanks.

Yes, regular plywood will delaminate and decompose rather quickly when repeatedly subjected to moisture. Okoume plywood is what is usually used in boats. It's costly but you won't need all that much.

You could also use exterior plywood. Like marine plywood, it is laminated with waterproof glue. The difference is that it can have patches and internal voids, which marine plywood won't. But a seat isn't as critical as hull sheathing, so it should work just fine. Another option is Baltic Birch, which can be had in small sheets and cuts. It's an extremely high quality ply that comes in several grades.

If you keep plywood parts well varnished, or epoxy covered, water should be a problem, and you must keep them well coated with something. Even marine plywood will rot if water wicks into an unprotected edge or a crack.
