Dave, just talked to Greg on the phone: if you head out from TB, we will come with the watertaxi via Bamfield to the BG and we can meet on Hand, if all plans are working out.

I hope you are not too busy with your now mothership!

For the first part of the trip, Gregn has come up with a great plan:

Saltspring Island circumnavigation trip
May 20 (Tuesday) to May 26 (Monday)

Tuesday Sidney (Amhurst Avenue) to Portland Island (Arbutus Point). Leave at 11:00. 13 km.

Wednesday Portland Island to Prevost Island (James Bay). Leave at 12:00. 15 km.

Thursday Prevost Island to Wallace Island (Chivers Point) via Montague Harbour and Ballingall Islets. Leave at 12:00. 22 km.

Friday, Saturday Side trips to Telegraph Harbour, Tent Island, or other locations.

Sunday Wallace Island to Musgrave Island (unimproved camping). Leave at 09:00. 29 km – mostly with strong tide.

Monday Musgrave Island Sidney (Amhurst Avenue). Leave at 10:00. 18 km.

Notes:

a/ We can start from Swartz Bay Govmt dock and shorten the Tuesday leg to 10 km, but we’ll miss some of the most beautiful shorelines in the area. Also launching in the Swartz Bay at low tide is not the most pleasant experience – rocks covered with sea weeds.

b/ Instead of camping on Prevost Island, we can paddle to Montague Harbour and camp there at the Marine Park. Wednesday leg will be lenghtened to 21 km, but Thursday leg will be shortened to 16 km, giving us more time for bird and cliff watching along the west shores of Galiano Island.

c/ Monday leg can be shortened to 8 km by terminating the trip at Moses Point (N/W Saanich Peninsula). Alternatively, it can be shortened to 15 km by terminating the trip at Swartz Bay.

I just received a message from Jim Harper and his wife. They want to join as well in their K-2.

Will, what dates do you foresee in Barkley Sound in May?

It is time to nail down my plans for that. Got two other guys here who may be interested. We would travel and launch independently. We three are experienced in Barkley Sound, to varying degrees, and would likely all be in hardshells, travelling via pickup to the launch point.

Dave, here is the Barkley Sound plan, the credit goes again to Greg, the mastermind behind our trip plans!

Thursday, May 29 - depart Port Alberni on Lady Rose at 08:00. Arrive in Bamfield 12:30. Embark on water taxi at 12:45 and start setting camp on Clarke at 13:30.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday - explore Broken Group with stationary camp on Clarke.

Monday, June 2 - pick up water taxi for Bamfield. Hamburger, shower (?), provisions in Bamfield. Paddle across Trevor Channel to Deer Group and set up camp.

Tuesday, Wednesday - explore Deer Group. Move camp once.

Thursday, June 5 - paddle back to Bamfield (or call for water taxi if weather not cooperative). Embark on Lady Rose at 13:30 for Port Alberni. Arrive 17:00 at Port Alberni. Hamburger. Drive to Victoria for 21:00 arrival at Greg's place.

We are looking forward to meet you out there!

willi, looking like I might make it. Still need a passenger to share costs to make this work.

BTW, Deer Group easily explored from one camp ... on Diana, most likely. Or, Sanford. Probably no one else out there that early in the summer. One concern: natives reportedly are constructing multiple cabins on Dodger Passage and E side of Kirby Point area. Not sure what this might mean for use of those areas for camping.

Here is an update for the upcomming Saltspring Island trip May 20 (Tuesday) to May 26 (Monday)

To make hooking up with fellow paddlers easier, we changed the plan:

Tuesday Sidney (Amhurst Avenue) to Portland Island (Arbutus Point). Leave at 11:00. 13 km.

Wednesday Portland Island to Prevost Island (James Bay). Leave at 12:00. 15 km.

Thursday Prevost Island to Wallace Island (Chivers Point) via Montague Harbour and Ballingall Islets. Leave at 12:00. 22 km.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday Side trips to Telegraph Harbour, Tent Island, and other locations.

Monday Prevost Island to Saltspring Island (Vesuvius Village). Leave at 12:00. 9 km.

Notes:

a/ We can start from Swartz Bay Govmt dock and shorten the Tuesday leg to 10 km, but we’ll miss some of the most beautiful shorelines in the area. Also launching in the Swartz Bay at low tide is not the most pleasant experience – rocks covered with sea weeds.

b/ Instead of camping on Prevost Island, we can paddle to Montague Harbour and camp there at the Marine Park. Wednesday leg will be lengthened to 21 km, but Thursday leg will be shortened to 16 km, giving us more time for bird and cliff watching along the west shores of Galiano Island.

c/ Monday leg will vary for different paddlers. Pick up for some will have to be arranged and other paddlers can paddle back to Amhurst Ave. via Sansum Narrows with an overnight camp in Musgrave Landing area.

we will stay for the weekend on Wallace, we hope it will be more convinient for Andreas to meet us out there and not have to bother with moving the car.

what do you guys think?

Ps: the Barkley Sound trip plan remains as posted!
