Aleut Rib Needed

Post by AlaskaProf »

I have an Aleut and a G II, both of which have lain unused for a long time and I've just decided to resurrect them. Unpacking, I was reminded that the little bolt which extends up from the "A" rib (poly) on the Aleut had broken off at the last use. Otherwise, both boats are in good shape.

I was shocked to discover Folbot is no more! Has anyone encountered this? Got a fix? I suppose it is too much to ask if anyone has a spare frame...

Drill out what remains of the broken bolt, and epoxy in a section of threaded 1/4-20 rod, or a stainless steel 1/4-20 bolt with the head sawn off.

Thanks. That's probably what's needed. I mis-stated the issue slightly. What has broken is the plastic socket cast on top of the rib in which the bolt was glued. Seems possible to drill a new hole into the rib, but true vertical orientation will be necessary--gotta find someone with a drill press, I guess.

If you are looking for a Aleut rib let me know as I am retiring my boat and have decided to part it out to other members of the flock so boats may live a little bit longer. Which rib A,B, or C?

Re: End Piece needed for Folbot expedition

Hi Photogoo,
I need a inner and outer aluminum end cap from a bow or stern. Meaning the longer pieces that are screwed together to keep the water from the seam.Would you be willing to unbolt or cut off from Skin?
I would send a shipping label.Let me know what you would want. I am on a road trip heading from Texas to VT via most of the east coast.
Where is the boat located? Thanks,
Jon

Well, it's the A rib, the one with the little screw onto which the name/cap fits (see illustration above), which has broken off. but I've decided that since the rest of the rib is completely functional, I'll just make my "temporary" repair the permanent solution.
Thanks for the offer, though.

I have had good success "welding" poly ribs with an electric soldering iron. Once the material melts it can be re-shaped and will set with a strong join.
