help. while i rinse thoroughly, one of my longeron is stuck together. right now it's in a PVC tube filled with water, trying to dissolve the salt. my zippers on carry bags are also salt crusted. any other ideas?

Some kind of penetrating oil might help with the longeron. I use a spray can of Boeshield to dissolve corrosion on the washboard carriage bolts. It might help with the stuck longerons. Boeshield has helped me with corroded zippers as well.

Is the longeron stuck at the shock-corded joint or at the sleeve?

What sticks tubes together is generally not salt, but corrosion. If the boat was left assembled for several days after salt water exposure, and soaking in fresh water doesn't release them, that may be what has happened. In that case, the solution is to replace the tubes.

I recently had this problem with an old foldable Super. I used two vices (one fixed, the other one in my hands). Vices gives you a much wider grip that doesn't permanently deform the tube, which pliers can do. Keep the vices away from where the inner tube is (it's where the tubes are stucked), and you don't want to add extra friction there. Use common sense when tightening the vices, they have to have a really firm grip, but you don't want to deform the tubes. Then try to rotate and wiggle at the same time.

I'll have to give that a try, paddlingSwede. Ironically, subsequent to Frank's original post and my reply I bought a Folbot Yukon in pretty nice shape except all four shock-corded longeron joints are frozen. For the moment I carry them in a PVC tube with end caps, but I'll try to unstick them at some point. Frank says he may try to replace the tubes on his boat. Short of buying a beater boat for parts, does anybody know a source for the tubing?
