Folbot G II, crossframe #2 broken

Post by DavisD »

Hi Gang,
The stainless steel pin in my #2 crossframe broke off. I had been frequently using my upwind sail rig during the winter and I guess the added pressure was too much for it. My Greenland II is the 2001 model so the frames are all black polycarbonate (not the later aluminum). The frame itself is intact, just the plastic around the pin crack and fell off (I'll try to shrink the photo enough to post it).

So I'm looking for:

1) suggestions on how to repair it. I've thought about sandwiching the frame between two thin pieces of marine plywood (cutouts for the entire thing to reinforce its strength) and then somehow mounting a new pin of the same size in a block of wood between the two. Anyone had to do something like this?

2) buy a used polycarbonate #2 from someone (I see a couple people are parsing out their parts).

3) Trying to locate an aluminum #2 (these look a lot stronger, and certainly are stronger on my more recent Cooper and Citibots). Will a more recent aluminum #2 crossframe even fit my model 2001?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
You can wrap/reinforce the whole piece in fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin. It will work for paddling. Yes an alu rib will fit from a newer Greenland.
Good luck
Best,
Jon

Thank you Jon, I had not even thought of fiberglassing it in. That will be a good fix for paddling. I would like to come up with something that will serve both for paddling and sailing.
I guess I'll start with trying to find a newer aluminum G2 crossframe.

You can "weld" it back on using a fine tipped soldering iron. Hold the broken part with the stud onto the frame and melt the contact area with the iron. Probably will not be as strong as original so you will need to strengthen it with aluminum bar or ideally a channel section. You can epoxy glue and rivet the aluminium to the frame.

Cheers Jim
