Post subject:  Shrinking skin at bow. Repair?

Friends, I have a 16' Big Sporty - not a folder, but a Folbot It was exposed to the sun during several hot summers, and the adhesive at the bow has crystallized and allowed the skin to come away from the frame. The skin has shrunk, and I can't stretch it to it's original size. I am toying with the idea of using a heat gun to soften and stretch it, and using an advanced silicone adhesive caulk to re-attach it. Has anyone had this problem, or have any other solutions that have worked? I also considered the idea of cutting away the shrunken section and restoring the skin with "Gorilla Tape." Any ideas or comments? Thanks for your help. I have pics and will post them.

I would not use silicone adhesive and certainly not Gorilla tape. Both those materials are good for many uses but not repairing boats.

If you could upload some photos of the damage (not on here which is not set up for that) on a site like Flickr and post a link so we could see it that could help in giving you advice.

Try soaking the skin first -- use a bucket of water with a little dish soap in it so it penetrates the fabric skin well. When the skin is wet it is easier to stretch. A better adhesive for boat skin repairs is Aquaseal. It is formulated to work on most fabrics and is waterproof and stretchable. You could use it to adhere a patch made of cotton or nylon canvas, rubber or vinyl. Most camping gear shops stock it or you can buy it on line.

I think the best fix would be a patch of PVC.

My concern about a PVC patch is that I don't know if the vinyl adhesive you use for PVC would adhere to the old canvas of the original skin. I don't think Aquaseal works on PVC but I could be wrong. I've used vinyl glue or H-66 for PVC.

I thought that was a PVC era boat. Is it rubber coated canvas?
