I was a charter boat fishing captain for about six years in the Upper NY Harbor. Probably the finest fishery that I have fished. The two primary fish being Striped Bass and Bluefish.

Most of us are familiar with Striped Bass. A kind of cow of the sea; pretty fun to catch as they put up a decent fight - a large one can get to 36-44 inches around Manhattan. They can also be quite tasty in the smaller sizes. Although I haven't kept one in close to thirty years. Stripers don't have teeth, but they instead protect themselves with very sharp dorsal fins that will easily pierce human skin and I'm sure our modern boats.

I've never caught a striped bass before, however I'm heading to Virginia at the end of April and will give it a try. The only fishing I have done out of my folding kayak was in a Saskatchewan Lake. We caught some pickerel and perch.

Pickerel, Perch and Bass are about all I've brought aboard as well. The bass are really fun.

I think you will like fishing the stripers, they are a fun fish and the big ones will put a nice bend in the rod. They can wear themselves out pretty thoroughly though. So if possible don't play them for too long and get them back into the water pretty quickly.

Not sure how the migration moves time wise through the spring. But the big Jamaica Bay tournament in NY is the second weekend of May - not sure what that means in terms of Virginia?... but you could always come up for this fishing as well! I'm hoping to be there.

I am really itching to get out.

I put my Long Haul Ute together two days ago and then took it apart after storing it in the basement for the night, John...
It snowed the next day so I was glad she wasn't sitting outside. It snowed again today and I was really thinking of putting her together again for a quick paddle but after taking some pictures of the lake I realized how cold it really was and I went back to work on my computer instead. It would have been great though. The water was glass and there was a light snow falling. Beautiful.

I am not sure I will ever be able to fish from that Ute though. Sooooo tippy. (for my size)
