I saw an image (attached) of a Garmin GPS mounted to a folding kayak (presumably a feathercraft given the deck strip).

I'm interested in doing the same and wondered if anyone here has had any experience/success doing it.

Hello, I can't find a picture of my GPS mounts but I have used the same baseplate I used for my compass. I have a Garmin Etrex and have one Garmin and one Ram mount glued to a plastic plate with the edges bent, so they can be installed under the shock cords on any kayak and easily removed. Both bottoms I smeared in silicone rubber and then sucked onto the plastic plate.

EDIT: On the small Garmin holder, I removed one link, to make it more compact and I fasten the GPS to the holder, using the Garmin bicycle bracket. Ram mount here http://www.rammount.com/part/RAP-SB-178-GA16

Poul that's excellent. Definitely an idea worth emulating.

How did you make the plastic bends?

Also, am I correct in assuming that the suction cup/silicon combo is semi permanent? Have you tried to get one off?

Both great ideas, thanks for sharing.

Dennis

Not semi, definitely permanent! Why would you try to get it off? ;-)

The bends were made with a big heatgun, in a hurry, therefore the bubbling. Done carefully and/or with a thermostat regulated gun, it could be made nicer.
It could also be done with a current through a wire but it should be connected to a spring, to take up slack when the wire expands.
Or heated in an oven and bent around a pencil.

Ingenious solution!
Might work too on my Coaster with the transverse deck bungees.
