It looks like it would be a bit of a barge to paddle. Notice how the paddlers have to lean way out to clear the gunwales.

I used to think that about all Canadian style canoes. until I paddled one of the better ones. They are actually faster than most kayaks.

I think what we're seeing is a more athletic technique. I've noticed that the racers lean out much farther than I do in a canoe.

One of the fleet of canoes that I grew up with was a Canadian Chestnut 18. A very nice item. We also had an Old Town Guide 18. The OT was finished better than the Chestnut, but they paddled about the same. A better one we had was a Grumman 18 believe it or not. Noisy, ugly, but it paddled well, Didn't gain weight through the season, needed no maintenance during the off season except once we put a big dent in it and that was fixed with the judicious use of a rubber mallet. The nicest canoe we had was a fiberglass Sawyer Cruiser that was shorter, 17' if memory serves. Not so dry riding as the others on big water, and less weight carrying capacity, but iit was much faster and very sleek to look at. The only one we have left is a Blue Hole 18 in Royalex, a real barge. Not sure how this new Long Haul would paddle and will hold my opinion until such time as a sea trial can be arranged. I am really loving my new LH MK1 and am predisposed to like their products.
