I read on the Folbot section their hull will shrink somewhat if you disassemble it and lay the hull down to dry off the frame. First off is that true and Is that a problem for the LH MK2 cotton hull. I am taking delivery of one in the spring. Just bought it today. I'm so happy. Thanks Mark! Anyway my Mazda CX 9 has no roof top rack so unless I add one and a kayak rack I will be disassembling it each time. We went out about 30 times this year and much of the time the inflatable kayak stayed in the back of the SUV after drying. What about LH cotton hull shrinkage?

This doesn't seem to be a problem with all Folbot hulls- I've never experienced it myself. It's not a problem at all with canvas decked boats that I've seen, and I've owned three Kleppers and a Long Haul.

It was a problem with older Feathercraft boats that had a Cordura deck.

Thanks. I'm longing for spring to get back in the water with our new LH MK 2. We have been kayaking since May of 2012 and love it. I told my wife it will be great to have a kayak that is not a compromise. I guess compromise is a relative thing since one person might think anything less than a LH Commando or the most expensive folder is a compromise. Another may say a Sevelor is the real compromise. Our first Kayak got us on the water so I feel great about the money we spent. In the spring we will have a nice guest kayak and we will be in our MK 2.

From what members say you have bought one of the best kayaks on the market and with normal use and a little TLC it will last many years. Hull shrinkage, it won,t happen. I have a Folbot Yukon which is now several years old and the only time i encountered hull shrinkage was when i assembled it in the winter. I live in northern ontario and our winters are very dry with low,low humidity and this lack of moisture in the atmosphere was the cause of shrinkage, when summer arrived the Yukon went to-gether as normal.

I routinely take my boat apart after use and lay the skin out to dry in my garage with a dehumidifier running. This is essential in here South Florida to avoid mildew. Never had a shrinkage problem with my cotton decked Klepper, nor with my SeaMark decked Long Haul. A friend has a Folbot and he has never mentioned this as a problem on his boat either. No matter the brand, folding kayaks all need to have their skin totally dry before being stored in their bag.
