Just wondering.
Has anybody tried to use a handheld waterproof anemometer (e.g. kestrel 4500 type), as an odometer (for boat speed readings), whilst immersed?
Greetings

ps: don't know if this question fits in this navigation gear topic, though.

Not sure I'd want to immerse such an expensive piece of equipment.

It's a bit expensive, but here's a dedicated flow meter: JDC FloWatch

Maybe someone knows a cheaper version.

Bear in mind that in tidal waters the speed of water under the boat is not the same as speed of boat geographically. You could use a GPS instead.

Thanks.
But that FloWatch is more expensive than a Kestrel (or related), and bulkier too, and it seems to me, a good piece of equipment for lab. purposes (just guessing).
I was looking for something "cheap", for the occasional reading in calm waters (no currents involved).
I don't carry gps yet (and for the moment don't need it either).
I understand your point though.
