kiayker

My name is Scott Hilliard. I grew up on the beaches of sunny Southern California where I learned to sea kayak, and kayak surf for 40 years, and taught kayaking for a shop for 30 years. I now live in Colorado.

Hi Scott,

Where in SoCal? What were your favorite spots? I tend towards Newport and around Palos Verdes.

Hi Scott! I spend a good part of my winters up in Granby, CO, but have yet to wet a paddle in the state. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome Scott!

Surf here in Colorado isn’t quite what it is in SoCal :)
I’m down by the Springs and I think there are some Folders up by Boulder. We should have a mountain paddle day before the lakes freeze up.
Cheers,

Kevin

Oops! I didn't realize people were responding to my intro :D

ewdysar, by favorite "spots" I assume you are referring to surfing. I lived in Costa Mesa, so Newport was real close, but for surf kayaking I was actually a big fan of San Onofre. Newport and Palos Verdes were fun for general sea kayaking.

kdwalmsley, I'm down by the Springs as well. I'm actually on the border as I live in Monument. I'd be up for a paddle some time, just let me know.

martin2007, I have not been to Granby yet, and had to look up just where that was. I brought my sea kayak out with me, but have only had it out a couple of times. The kayaking out here is a lot tougher requiring a lot of driving, and seasonal. But I still try to get out when I can.

Scott,
I’m booked solid with projects for a few days. Let me look at my schedule tomorrow and we can make something happen.

Martin,
When do you get to Colorado?
Cheers,

Kevin

I've been in Monument for about three years now. I will be out of town this weekend. I have commitments at home which make it difficult for me to get out for extended periods of time, so I tend to concentrate on short trips close to home. But we might be able to work something out - I'm not in any hurry.

I’m tied up till 9/15 then things open up on the weekends. Unfortunately, that puts us into hit or miss weather. Great excuse to get a dry suit. 9/15 open for you? Maybe we can find a couple more Folders to come along.
Cheers,

Kevin

Martin here. I'll be coming to CO. in January ( mainly for the snow). The Green River just over the state line, is on my bucket list, though, for a spring trip one of these days.

The Green River in spring is an excellent idea! I found this blog series very informative:

Hey Kiayker,

I grew up in San Pedro and RPV, used to surf Bluff cove and the beaches from Rat to Redondo when I was a kid.

Cheers,

Chris
