3 week paddling trip in Stockholm archipelago

Post by MatsB »

Here are some photos from my 3 week paddling trip during the summer in the Stockholm archipelago. I had great weather most of the trip, but some Beaufort 6 crossings.

The waters outside the archipelago was once regarded as one of the world's most dangerous waters. Still, when standing on one of the outermost islands during a storm, the whole eastern horizon is a long line of white breaking waves, called "Svenska Vallen" ("The Swedish Wall"). 20,000 documented wrecks in the Baltic and an conservative estimate by the maritime museums of 100,000...

By the way - over the centuries (first time in 1626), there's also a really interesting series of observations on the island of Svenska Högarna (http://kartor.eniro.se/m/nN6SL). The sight was called "Gunnils Öra" ("Gunnil's Ear"). People claimed they could see two or three islands to the southeast of Svenska Högarna, where there are no islands but only the Baltic, and these islands even appear in charts now and then. The sight was reported a few times per century. Recently, a scientific explanation has been provided, and it is really a mirage of the islands Dagö and Ösel in Estonia some 200 kms away! There's a very precise set of circumstances when this appears - temperature-/humidity-wise, optical and meteorological, etc.

Thanks for sharing those great pics, looks like a totally peaceful place to tour...except for the open water. And thanks for this history lesson, pretty cool stuff.

Beautiful photographs and weather by the looks of it. Quite an adventure. Glad you had no problems and got home safely.
